Productivity Hack : From Jakartans For Jakartans

on

I’m a productivity freak. Time is my most valuable resources.

It’s the one thing I can’t get back. Once it’s lost it’s lost. See, by writing this article I’m spending 60–90 mins I’m never getting back. And if it’s not something that I really love doing, I’d like to cut it as short as possible. Bet you know by now how much doing this means to me, right? 😉

See if this rings a bell with you too. Browsing Instagram kudu sambil kumpulin inspirasi buat photoshoot. Oh, masak! Wait until you see me cook. Kalau kompor dengan tiga api. Yang satu bakal ngerebus mie instan. Yang satu nyeplok telor. Yang satu ngegoreng karaage. Intinya, gua ga bisa idle. And it’s for all the right reasons.

This way, kalian akan bisa menemukan lokasi yang win-win for both. Tentunya jangan egois juga. Contoh: lokasi meeting agak jauh dari tempat lo berangkat tapi deket dengan tempat tujuan lo berikutnya. Works 95% of the time. The 5% is for when you’re meeting the president. No, you’ll let him decide the location.
  2. Sebelum bertemu, tentukan agenda meeting & durasi. Kalau ada yang terlambat datang, tetap selesai on time. Helps 100% of the time, karena jadi fokus ke point diskusi dulu, baru habis itu kalau masih ada free time, silahkan mau campur sari kemana pun.
  3. Tentukan satu hari khusus untuk meeting. This is my personal favorite.

Hacking Workflow

  1. Kenali diri dan jam berapa biasanya lo ‘in the zone’ untuk aktivitas tertentu. Gua paling asik nulis waktu sore menjelang malam. Siang habis lunch gua paling bego, so gua suka pake waktunya untuk balas email, WA, atau meeting ketemu orang. Yak, ketauan deh, maaf ya kalau gua bales delaynya lama, karena ya itu, unless yg urgent banget gua bales langsung, sisanya di jam bego gua. Plus, you know what, gua bales WA pun di laptop, supaya produktif, ngetiknya cepet haha.
A day to get things done.
  4. Kenali diri dan cara kerja team lo. Sama seperti no (1), tapi kali ini, kalian saling share jam produktif kalian, sehingga sebagai team, lo tau kapan lo bisa ganggu satu sama lain, kapan lo mesti biarkan dia autis karena dia lagi ‘in the zone’. Begitu juga sebaliknya. Lo tau lo mesti kasih brief minimal sore hari karena designer lo perlu sejam mencerna, lalu malam hari adalah saatnya dia ‘in the zone’ dan niscaya pagi hari lo uda bisa liat hasilnya. With this simple understanding, you all win as a team.

Ga berasa dua topik aja uda padat ya. I think I’ll stop here first and will continue on the next productivity hack series. Kenapa? Buat apa tau, tapi ga dipake ilmunya.

Gua akan tutup dengan satu note. I like being productive, not for productive (as in bottom line) sake. By being productive, I have spare time for everything else that brings balance in my life. And by everything else, I mean sleep or Netflix & chill. Haha. For some, that means time with your newborn kids, or a proper sleep, or gym time, or a precious catch up with your bestfriend. For me, by being productive, I’m buying my sanity. And that’s the most important thing living, breathing, pacing in the concrete jungle that we continuously have love and hate relationship with, Jakarta.

Cheers,
@fellexandro

  1. Hi, It’s been awhile I guess. I decided to cut myself out of social media recently and somehow, I find that in Jakarta and being Jakartan, one of the best productivity hack (at least for me) is cutting myselft off Social Media – or in some ways, just go to airplane mode during your work time.

Or other hack that worked for me is browsing in private mode (or incognito mode). That way, when you open social media page, it won’t automatically log you in, and somehow that pause from automatically logging in, give me the restrain that I need to stay focused.

I treated social media like an ordinary webpage now, if I want to see what someone’s is up to now, I just type that person’s instagram URL. the only pain is I can’t comment on that post. But for now, I think I can live up to it 🙂

I have tons of think that I want to comment on your instagram post (like the john oliver and other). But for now, I will settle with reading your post now and then.

    Have a good day.

    1. Hi Ray, I did a quick calculation the other day. If I follow say 1000 people. Say 300 (1/3) of them posted Instagram Stories. Each take about 5 seconds to view. Then I can spend up to 1500 seconds. That’s 25 minutes wasted kepo-ing someone elses life.

That being said. Couldn’t agree more with you. And your simple trick on treating it like webpage must give you a lot of control. I personally turn off notifications from any kind of social media. And I would only look at it when I’m really on idle.

      Stay productive man!
